Ilmamõtsan (In the Wood of the World)

Mari Kalkun’s music is at once of a place and deeply personal. Rooted in ancient Estonian and Võru traditions, her music, for those of us with ears and hearts open, resonates deep within us to touch our spirits, our souls - even when the language is strange to us. Songs and musical arrangements that are sparse and stripped down allow emotion to surface and the song breath and reveal itself as something organic and real. Hers is an intimate music that seems born of Baltic winter forests and icy landscapes and yet there is renewal, hope and celebration to be heard also. Mari's voice speaks directly to us all and reminds us just how vast the soul of the singer can be and how small our world is.

Mari Kalkun (b. 1986) is a musician, singer and songwriter who creates deep-rooted personal music channelled by her warm voice and atmospheric compositions. The songs are largely her own compositions, inspired by nature, contemporary poetry and life itself. She accompanies herself mainly with traditional Estonian zither - kannel- bringing this archaic instrument to 21st Century with playful ease. Strongly relying on her Southern Estonian roots, traditional lullabies become reflections of our restless world and contemporary poems mingle with rare local languages.

She has released four albums in Estonia, Europe and Japan. Since issuing her first album "Üü tulõk" (Arrival of the Night) in 2007 in Estonia, concerts have brought her to many parts of Europe, by now all her records have also been released in Japan. Mari Kalkun nominated as the Best Female Artist of the Year 2018 by Estonian Music Awards and her last album “Ilmamõtsan” (In the Wood Of the World) was a nominated as the Best Ethno Album of the Year. “Ilmamõtsan” was also chosen to TOP 10 of World Music Charts Europe. Her international Helsinki-based group Mari Kalkun & Runorun album "Tii ilo" was relased in 2015 by the reputable Finnish label Rockadillo Records, receiving praise from Nordic media. Kalkun was named as Best Singer at Estonia's 2013 Ethno Music Awards and has been a nominee at Estonian and Finnish Music Awards several times. Mari Kalkun has got a masters degree of traditional singing from Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre.

マリ・カルクンの音楽は、彼女の出身地と深く関わっている。 古代エストニアとヴォルの伝統にルーツを持つ彼女の音楽は、オーディエンスに心身を解放させ、たとえ歌詞の内容が分からなくとも、心の琴線に触れるかのごとく訴えかけてくるものがある。
彼女の音楽的特徴として、感情を全面に出し、息継ぎを聞かせ、音楽をオーガニック且つリアルなものとして表現する。
マリの曲には、彼女の生まれ育ったバルトの冬の森と氷の風景の中に、季節の移り変わり、希望、お祝いなどのにぎやかさも感じ取ることが出来る。
マリの声は聞き手の心に直接的に訴えかけ、魂の広がり、我々の住んでいる世界がいかに小さい（狭い）のかを改めて気付かせてくれる。


マリ・カルクン（1986年生）は音楽家、歌手、ソングライター。
暖かみのある歌声と独自の作曲能力により、深みのある唯一無二な音楽を作り出す。
レパートリーの多くは、自然、現代詩、日常生活の中から影響を受け作り上げられたオリジナル作品である。
彼女は主にエストニア伝統楽器zither – kannelをもち歩き、21世紀の現代においてこの古典的楽器を演奏する。
彼女の出身である南部エストニアをルーツに持つ伝統的な子守歌のアレンジは、希少な地元の言語と、忙しない現代社会を描く現代詩とが混じり合う１曲となっている。


マリはエストニア、ヨーロッパ、日本でこれまで4枚のアルバムをリリースしている。エストニアで2007年に彼女のファーストアルバム"Üütulõk"（Arrival of the Night）を発表して以来、彼女をヨーロッパの多くの地域でコンサートを行ってきた。
マリは、エストニアの音楽賞で2018年のベスト女性アーティストにノミネートされ、彼女の最新のアルバム「Ilmamõtsan」（In the wood of the world）は、Best Ethno Album of the Yearにノミネートされた。
「Ilmamõtsan」はまた、World Music Charts Europeのトップ10に選ばれた。
フィンランドのヘルシンキを拠点とするグループMari Kalkun＆Runorunのアルバム「Tii ilo」は、2015年にフィンランドのレーベルRockadillo Recordsからリリースされ、北欧のメディアから賞賛を受けている。
エストニアの2013 Ethno Music Awardsでベストシンガーに選ばれ、これまでエストニアとフィンランドの音楽賞で数回ノミネートされる経験を持つ。
エストニアの音楽劇場（EstonianAcademy of Music and Theatre）で伝統歌の修士号も取得している。
